Volta: By Lemoignan reimagines the barbershop

Design studio By Lemoignan took on an ambitious project for Salon Volta in Laval: creating an environment bold enough to break away from everything a barbershop is expected to be.

Designer Tony Lemoignan drew inspiration from dark, mineral-inspired architecture to create a deliberately raw, almost cavernous atmosphere that immediately asserts the venue’s unique identity.

The workstations, positioned in the centre of the space rather than along the walls, facilitate smooth movement, stimulate collaboration and encourage interaction between professionals. This innovative layout reimagines the traditional salon floor plan while maximizing the number of stations. Custom-made by a cabinetmaker in a striking butter yellow, they become the sculptural centrepiece of the room.

“With an approach that is both refined and bold, By Lemoignan creates spaces that awaken the senses, embody the essence of a brand and leave a lasting impression,” says Tony Lemoignan, designer and founder of the studio.

The materials, carefully chosen to evoke natural elements, contribute to a minimalist, almost sterile aesthetic. The walls are covered in limewash, the floor is finished in matte epoxy, and the furniture is crafted from Homapal® Metal Laminates in the Brushed Aluminum design (M2022). This pattern was used for the payment counter, in the cloakroom, and for the wall-mounted panels.

Choosing Homapal® Metal Laminates ensured an uncompromising standard of quality without sacrificing on aesthetics — and the material's ease of installation made it the practical choice as well as the inspired one.

“At By Lemoignan, we prioritize the use of local and Canadian products. We have been working with Formica® and Homapal® Laminates for a long time, and we value them for their quality and aesthetic appeal,” says Tony Lemoignan. The studio rounds out this approach by weaving in furniture, lighting and vintage objects — details that give each project its own distinct character.

With Salon Volta, Tony Lemoignan has done more than redesign a barbershop — he's created a space with a personality of its own, where the work, the craft and the community all share the floor.
