Onetwosix: Sustainability and Environmental Protection

Onetwosix, based in Edmonton, Alberta, and founded by industrial designers Nick Kazakoff and Brendan Gallagher, has opted for a sustainable approach to design that promotes respect for the environment and its employees. These values are also the cornerstone of the Loop phone booths, which are closed, ergonomic and soundproofed spaces designed for individual or small group work in open-plan working environments. In the early days of the company, moving Loop booth production to Asia would have been a logical choice to produce booths at lower cost. However, the founders chose to produce them in Canada to be more agile, maintain jobs and offer a high-quality product made locally.

All the products and materials used in the manufacture of Loop office spaces comply with high sustainability standards. Formica® products were chosen for the interior fittings of booths specifically because of their durability and high quality, as well as their GREENGUARD certification. The Formica Group's focus on manufacturing sustainable products, and its drive to achieve carbon neutrality in its operations, aligns perfectly with Onetwosix's values, making Formica Corporation a preferred first-rate supplier.

BIFMA E3 certification, the benchmark for sustainability

In 2021, the Onetwosix team took steps to obtain BIFMA E3 certification for its Loop office spaces. This certification, which assesses the environmental, health and well-being, and social impacts of commercial furniture products, has become the benchmark for sustainability in the industry.

“Sustainability has been one of our core values from the outset and is a key dimension appreciated by our customers and all our team members. All the decisions we make, as well as our vision, reflect our commitment to creating useful, sustainable products that protect the environment,” says Nick Kazakoff, Co-Founder of Onetwosix.

“We’re currently aiming for the third level of certification to achieve the highest standards of sustainability in our industry. It's a lot of work, but we believe in it deeply. The BIFMA E3 standard encourages continuous improvement, a goal we’re pursuing through our continuing efforts to innovate and implement new sustainable development initiatives,” says Nick Kazakoff.

For instance, the remnants generated during the production of the booths are used to manufacture new Loop Furniture brand pieces, because the company is determined not to generate residual waste in the manufacture of its products. Formica Corporation shares this desire to recycle its waste. That's why we have set up a new laminate sample recycling program in partnership with TerraCycle. This program transforms obsolete samples into raw materials that can be reused by other manufacturers in the design of their products.

For Loop office spaces there is a label on the back of each booth inviting owners looking to dispose of their obsolete booth to contact the company, so that Onetwosix can recover and restore the booth, preventing it from being thrown away.

Onetwosix and Formica Corporation share a common vision regarding the importance of environmental respect and protection in the design and production of their products, as well as in the operation of their facilities.
